Myth Busters: Should You Rub Perfume on Your Pulse Points?

Today’s myth: “You must apply perfume on your pulse points and rub your wrists together, or it won’t work.” Let’s find out.

Do you need pulse points?
No, but they help. Pulse points like the wrists, neck, and inner elbows are warmer, and warmth helps a fragrance spread and project. But perfume works on any skin. Spraying your chest or the back of your neck is just as good.

Should you rub your wrists together?
Skip it. Rubbing creates friction and heat, which makes the lighter top notes evaporate faster. The scent can smell flatter and fade sooner. The popular claim that rubbing “crushes” the molecules is not backed by solid evidence, but the downside is real enough to stop.

How to apply perfume properly

  • Spray on clean, moisturized skin. Dry skin lets scent disappear faster.
  • Hold the bottle 15 to 20 cm away.
  • Let it dry on its own. Dab gently if you must.
  • One to three sprays is enough for most perfumes.

Verdict: mostly a myth. Pulse points are helpful but not required, and rubbing does more harm than good.
